I just need to get published, free or cheap.

A new show just needs to get published without fuss: pick a simple host, upload, and it distributes to Apple, Spotify, and the rest. Buzzsprout is the easy default, Spotify for Creators is free, and RSS.com is cheap with your own feed from the start. Pro analytics, teams, and monetization can wait until the show is actually running.

I need room to grow: multiple shows, a team, real analytics.

A show that is scaling needs room: several shows under one account, team access, and analytics you can trust. Transistor gives unlimited shows and team seats, Simplecast brings IAB-certified numbers, and Captivate is built around growth. This is the step up from a simple launch host once one show and basic stats stop being enough.

I want a host with monetization built in.

Some hosts build the money tools in: dynamic ads, premium subscriptions, and listener support without bolting on a separate platform. Podbean, RedCircle, Captivate, and Libsyn each include monetization in the host itself. This band is about which host has the plumbing; how you actually earn — sponsorships versus memberships versus support — is the Monetize guide's job.

I want to own my feed and control who gets it.

If you want to own your distribution and decide who hears it, you want a host built for control: your own WordPress and RSS, open standards, and private feeds for members or internal use. Castos does both WordPress ownership and private feeds, Blubrry is WordPress-native with IAB stats, and Transistor runs clean private feeds. This is for shows that refuse lock-in or need to gate access.

I want hosting plus the post-production done for me.

Some hosts bundle far more than hosting: episode sites, video, and post-production like transcripts, clips, and social posts, so recording is nearly the last manual step. Podhome is a modern all-in-one, and PodcastAI automates the most after you record, from transcripts and clips to social and the episode site. The trade is breadth over depth: a bundle rarely matches a dedicated host on any single feature, and some skip a free tier, pro analytics, monetization, or private feeds.

Questions

What does a podcast host do?

A podcast host stores your audio, generates your RSS feed, and submits your show to directories like Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Most hosts also provide analytics and a basic website.
