Mastering Podcast Introductions: Essential Tips for Engaging Listeners from the Start

Experienced podcasters know that introducing each episode correctly is crucial for attracting a broad audience and keeping them tuned in.

A weak, unconvincing opening without a catchy jingle or lacking the right information could turn listeners away even before reaching the heart of the episode, which is the content.

In this blog post, we'll explain how to properly introduce your podcast in a few simple steps.

But that's not all: in the dedicated section, you'll find two templates, one for creating an elaborate introduction and one for a shorter version.

This will help you craft your podcast intros effortlessly and with the best results.

Follow our step-by-step guide carefully, and success won't be long in coming!

Why is a Podcast Introduction Crucial for Success?

It's simple: while loyal listeners who already know you will probably stick with you to the end of the program, even when the episode isn't the most brilliant, new listeners tend to base their decision on the first few minutes when deciding whether to stay or leave.

This applies to at least a third of your total audience, and believe me, it's not insignificant, especially if you are at the beginning of your journey in the world of audio communication.

And if that wasn't enough incentive to create a brilliant introduction, know that the search engine algorithm rewards those with solid engagement, and penalizes those who are abandoned after just a few minutes of listening.

This is true not only for podcasts, but also for blog posts and videos. In short, if the audience gives you their time, the search engine makes you visible.

If they discard you in a few minutes or seconds, the message is clear, and so will the response of the Search Engine.

How to craft the perfect intro

To really grab your listeners' attention, it’s a good idea to map out the intro steps carefully.

Try to share the info in a specific order and stick to the same format for each episode. This consistency helps set the stage right from the start of every episode.

  1. Greet, state the podcast name, and introduce the host, any co-hosts, and guests. Be warm, friendly, and positive.

  2. Reveal the episode title. This not only identifies you but allows your listeners to understand what topic we will cover before starting.

  3. Briefly describe the content. Since you'll be talking about it in detail shortly, simply provide a brief overview, perhaps announcing that you will answer any questions or convey listener questions to the guests.

  4. Give the audience a reason to stay, briefly explaining why they should continue listening to you, whatever the topic you'll cover.

  5. Encourage the audience to show support through subscriptions, social media, purchasing a product, or interacting with comments in the live, or leave feedback at the end of the episode. Include what's known as a "Call to Action (CTA)."

  6. Thank the sponsors; this is the right moment to remember who supports you, or to launch a brief advertising message.

  7. Start the opening jingle. If you don't have one yet, and if you want some advice on how to choose it, read our guide: How to Choose a Winning Jingle for Podcasts.

Other tips to consider:

  • The podcast intro, although complete, must be brief, and should not take up more than 3-4% of the time allotted for each episode. To give you an idea, if the standard duration is 60 minutes, the introduction should be developed and completed in about two minutes.

  • A catchy jingle has invaluable worth in the success of a podcast. It should be short but captivating, and preferably enhance the theme of the podcast. Inserting a jingle or not is a personal choice of the podcaster, but as far as I am concerned, I recommend doing it. It’s a useful tool that adds body and vitality to the podcast at an insignificant cost, so if you still don't have one, give it some thought.

  • Keep the sound effects consistent over time if you decide to include them, and choose them wisely. Cooking shows and crime narratives do not benefit from the same sound effects, and to keep the right vibes high, this is an important point. Also, only add sound effects if they're relevant and if time allows, since the intro should not exceed the predetermined length.

  • If you want to increase your followers' interest, include in the intro a question or a phrase that piques their curiosity.

How to Create the Perfect Intro - Practical Examples

Here's an example of an episode introduction developed respecting the points described above:

Complete 7-Step Introduction:

  1. Good evening everyone and welcome to 'Unsolved Crimes.' I am David Rosemberg and with me today are my co-hosts Adam Gold and Paul McGrew, and our special guest, forensic criminologist Dr. Matt Bradwell. Together, we are going to take a dive into the shadows of a case that has shaken our community.

  2. Today, on our episode, 'Terror on Full Moon Nights,' we're going to try to find the answers to the mysterious murder of Mary Blige. This cruel crime occurred about 15 years ago in the heart of a small tourist town on the north coast of Maine.

  3. We'll discuss the main points of the investigation, the investigative mistakes that forced detectives to abandon the case until today, and the disturbing recent developments that can finally lead to the resolving of the case.

  4. This ferocious crime is not just an unsolved puzzle, but a condition of social and family deterioration common in some kinds of North American rural areas. Stay tuned with us to see how small clues can disclose hidden truths and how, more often than one might think, the darkest secrets lie in plain sight and in the hearts of unsuspecting families.

  5. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel, follow us on social media, or join the live comments. It's only because of your support that we can keep working to bring these stories to you.

  6. Special thanks go to our sponsors who enable us to continue sharing with you our discoveries.

  7. And now, without further ado, let the mystery begin. [Opening Jingle].

Short Full Introduction in 7 Steps:

If your podcast episodes are very short, for example only 5-10 minutes a day, here's an introduction suitable for your theme.

The expected reading time is about 30 seconds. I have divided the text into 7 points as per the 2 minutes template

  1. Good morning everyone, welcome to 'The Weather with Alice,'

  2. your reliable daily weather update.

  3. I'm Alice Armstrong,

  4. ready to give you all the information you need to best organize your day.

  5. Today, in just 5 minutes, we will find out together whether the sun will brighten our day or whether we will need to open our umbrellas.

  6. Don't miss a minute, get ready to start on the right foot, thanks also to our sponsor!

  7. And now, today's forecast! [Opening Jingle]

How to Insert Sponsors and Advertisements Properly in the Intro

Inserting what in technical language is called a CTA (Call To Action) in a 30-second intro can be a real challenge, but sponsors are those who allow you to continue recording, and therefore you cannot leave them aside.

In some cases, you might want to promote your book, or ask for support through subscriptions.

As important as sponsors are, the general rule for introductions is to mention them briefly and naturally, without forcing it.

Be brief, limit yourself to the essentials, and possibly return to the advertising message at the outro of the episode.

In this blog post, we have suggested how to create an intro designed to be direct and complete while respecting the times established by your episode.

By following our advice, you will let listeners know exactly what they can expect from the podcast in a very brief and dynamic format, whatever its length is. Follow each step, and the success of your podcast is guaranteed.
